Learning to Heel

A dog's natural instinct is to sniff the ground, looking for the traces of other animals, especially when they are young. Not to walk neatly on your left side.

Start Heel training in your backyard, off leash. Walk with some food in your left hand, and encourage him to follow and stay close, all the while repeating the word "heel". Reward him after several steps. Repeat this several times a day until he has the hang of it.

You may then wish to try this at the local dog park.

When you commence training with a leash, ensure that when your dog is "heeling" properly, that the lead hangs loose. It should only be tight when he moves out of the Heel position.
