Learning to Sit

Sitting is a naturally occurring position for your dog. So when you see your dog about to sit, say "Sit" and immediately pat and praise him.

Another trick is to hold food in front of his nose, then lift it higher. This should make him sit up, and so you say "Sit" and give him the reward.

Or using a head collar, gently lift your dog's head, and with your other hand, gently push his bottom down. Again, say "Sit" and reward him.

Repeat several times during the day, so you don't get bored.

Don't waste your time trying to train your dog when he is distracted (by other dogs, people or animals) or obviously bored. And don't let him go until he has completed the action at least once. Otherwise you're just teaching him to ignore you and your commands.
